William Barlow, 71, met one of his killers he night before his death, and even took her to his condominium in Cocoa Beach. Katerina Aaron, 28, and Nathaniel Grimes Jr., 44, were charged with first-degree murder, burglary with assault and auto theft.
William’s body was found by a friend on Friday afternoon, January 4, 1991, at his condo at 224 S. Brevard Avenue. Police said Katerina told investigators that William picked her up in Cocoa at 9:30 p.m. on January 3, and spent about five hours at his home. While he slept, she took his car and traveler’s checks and went back to Cocoa. She tried, unsuccessfully, to cash the checks.
Katerina told police that she later picked up Nathaniel and they decided to go to William’s home. At 6:30 a.m., they parked William’s car in his garage and went inside where he was sleeping. Katerina said Nathaniel then choked William with his bare hands. Nathaniel put a pillow over William’s face and continued to choke him until he stopped struggling.
After Nathaniel tied William’s hands behind him, the couple went through the condo taking credit cards, personal items and the car.
Katerina and Nathaniel were taken into custody the next day at Orlando Fashion Square when they tried to make a purchase of several hundred dollars at Sears with William’s credit card.
Katerina was convicted of first-degree murder and was released in July 2003. Nathaniel was convicted of Manslaughter but then was freed from Florida’s death row in 1985 after the US Supreme Court temporarily outlawed capital punishment. He was convicted of first-degree murder for the January 13, 1969, robbery and shooting death of a Tallahassee motel owner during a robbery attempt.
