On Monday, March 13, 1995, Ormond Beach police responded to a 911 call and found retiree Clarence Henry Vion, 61, of 75 Brookwood Drive, lying face down in a pool of blood on his kitchen floor. Clarence’s housemate, Leroy Ladnier, who was bloody and bound with an extension cord when police arrived, told investigators that he and Clarence were the victims of a home invasion.
Leroy, 24, initially insisted someone broke into the house and killed Clarence. He admitted later hat robbery was the goal of another man who owed Clarence money. William Austin Abercrombie, also known as “Willie Worm” was sought out by police for the crime.
Leroy told police that William illegally charged $1,360 to Clarence’s credit card. Clarence had planned to file criminal charges unless he was repaid. He said that he and William plotted the burglary to steal money from Clarence’s residence to pay the credit card bill. William was to find Clarence’s stash of cash while Clarence and Leroy were out, then he was to leave the scene. But when Leroy and Clarence returned, William was still there. William scuffled with Clarence, beating him with a green bottle, then tied Leroy with an extension cord and left the house, telling him to wait an hour before calling 911. Leroy said he was able to drag himself to a nearby phone to make the call.
William, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He said he would rather plead guilty than chance a trial that could lead to life in prison.
