Full Name:  Florencio Alvarez
Date of birth:  August 17, 1955
Conviction:  1st-degree murder
County:  Miami-Dade
City:  Miami
Current Location:  Mayo Correctional Institution
Date of Crime:  November 11, 1981
Tentative discharge date:  Life
Victim(s):  Evelio Valdez

On November 11, 1981, Florencio Alvaraz, 39, used a MAC-10 submachine gun to kill his sleeping roommate, Evelio Valdez, after the two had argued about ownership of a bag of marijuana.  He later bragged about the murder.

On January 2, 1995, Florencio and six other killers escaped from the Glades Correctional Institute through a tunnel they spent months digging under the prison’s chapel.  For weeks, the men snuck undetected into the crawl space beneath the red brick chapel, carving a 45-foot long tunnel from the rich, black Okeechobee muck with pilfered shovels and burrowing under a razor-wire fence.  A little over a week later, police tracked down Florencio at a remote squatter’s camp in a wooded area west of Miami International Airport
