A Gainesville man was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of another man in the Hickory Hills apartment complex early Wednesday, July 19, 2006.  Brandon Ashley Lee, 25, who lived in the Hickory Hills complex, was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to the back of the head at around 1 a.m. in the northeast corner of the complex on SW 15th Lane.  Neighbors were awakened by a man who knocked on doors and shouted for someone to call 911 after the shooting.  Brandon died of his injuries just before noon.

Justin Paul Barlow, 20, was arrested and charged with Brandon’s death.  Investigators believed Justin was the man who shouted for help then ran away.  He was originally believed to be a witness, but later was found to be the person responsible for the shooting.  The shooting may have had something to do with an unspecified drug-related “business transaction.”

Gretchen Keen, who lives in the building next to where the shooting occurred, said that the man who had been pounding on the door ran away once she and her roommate got dressed and went outside.  She said they ran downstairs with another neighbor and found Brandon bleeding on the pavement next to a Ford F-150 truck they didn’t recognize as belonging in the neighborhood.  The truck was still running and Brandon was lying between the truck and the neighbor’s car.  Gretchen immediately called 911.  “He had a hole in his head and he was gasping and making this horrible noise.  We just kept telling him to hang on.”

Gretchen said, from what she saw, Brandon had been shot in the back of the head and the bullet had exited his face near his right eye.  “He had just gotten shot because when we first got there there was just a little blood, but after a while it got really bad.”
