Gerardo Quiroz Gonzalez was charged with first-degree murder for shooting Francisco Javier Costilla, 23, in the head at close range on January 15, 2000, in Postville. Ricardo Moncada Nava, 20, told police that he and Francisco were listening to music with friends when there was a knock at the door. Ricardo said three men entered the room and Ricardo recognized Gerardo Gonzalez as a worker at Agriprocessors, Inc.
Gerardo said he was looking for someone named Santiago Chago Vega. When Francisco said Santiago did not live there, Gerardo replied, “But you live here.” Gerardo then raised a handgun and shot Francisco. Another witness gave police a similar story.
Gerardo was found guilty of first-degree murder and was served a mandatory term of life in prison without parole.
