City:  Sigourney
Current Status:  Anamosa State Penitentiary
Partner in crime:  Maria Allar
Date of Crime:  February 14, 1996
Tentative Discharge Date:  Life
Victim:  Larry Grove

Maria Allar's fatal attraction for Larry Grove began with a crush that she developed for him at age seven.  The crush blossomed into a romance around 1994.  The two began dating, but Larry broke off the relationship in the fall of 1996.

Lance Grotewold, who represents the 19-year-old Sigourney woman, says that she planned her former boyfriend's murder, and that she will most likely testify that she plotted with Jesse Jackson, 24, to kill Larry, 29, on Valentine's Day, 1996.

Maria told authorities that she and Jesse followed Larry when he left Sigourney that morning to go to college classes in Ottumwa.  They signaled Larry to stop, there was a brief discussion between Maria and Larry, and then Jesse began shooting.

Authorities stated that Maria had been asking her friends if they knew someone who would kill Larry for her.  Just a few weeks prior to the shooting, Maria met Jesse in Oskaloosa.  Jesse had dated one of Maria's friends for a while and allegedly offered to kill Larry in exchange for money.

Maria and Larry had dated for two years before he broke off the relationship.  This caused Maria, a former high school honor student and all-state volleyball player, to fall into a depression.  She quit college and withdrew from her friends and family.  Maria's parents sought help for their daughter through counseling.  She also began taking medication for her depression.

Maria's obsession came to head on November 25, 1995, when she was charged with breaking into Larry's home and threatening him with a shotgun.  She was put on probation and was ordered to stay away from Larry.  The probation was revoked after she was cited for confronting him at a Sigourney convenience store in December.

Maria's attorney said it appeared that Maria had overcome her obsession with Larry just days before the murder.  She'd enrolled in classes at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, where Larry was also a student.  But unknown to her parents, Maria had begun to plot.  She asked several people for their assistance in obtaining revenge against her former love.

Following the murder, Maria became hysterical and told her mother about the shooting.  Deputies took Maria to the sheriff's office where she broke into sobs and became incoherent.
