Shawn Daniel Cashoili, 20, and Matthew J. Krewson, 19, were charged with first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the firebombing that killed a disabled Council Bluffs man on September 19, 1994. Lynn Madsen, Sr., 46, died of smoke inhalation in the fire, which started when a flaming bottle of gasoline was thrown through a window in a room next to his bedroom. A family member said Lynn was diabetic and probably would not have been able to get out of bed.
Matthew admitted lighting and throwing the Molotov cocktail into Lynn’s house. He said he left Lynn’s that evening to buy a gun from Robert Carlson, a tenant in Lynn’s home. Matthew left Lynn’s house after a dispute with Robert over the purchase of the gun, which Matthew told police he paid Robert for, but which Robert did not give him. He made the firebomb and threw it in the house after the dispute.
Both Shawn and Matthew pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree murder and received 50 years for the murder charge and 25 years on the first-degree arson charges.
