On September 14, 2015, Amber Shipley, 20, got into a fight with ShyAnne Parrott, 17, outside the Morton-Hames Public Library in Nebraska City at about 5:30 PM, just before ShyAnne left to take a friend to work. ShyAnne then returned to the library, drove into an adjacent parking lot and turned her pickup around.
Rather than exiting, the pickup drove directly toward Amber, hit her, and drove over the grass and a sidewalk before leaving the scene. Some witnesses told investigators that Amber began walking toward the truck just before she was hit. Amber was takent to the hospital in Lincoln with critical injuries. She suffered from a traumatic brain injury, road rash, and broken bones. She died on September 21.
Amber's mother suspects this was all out of jealousy. Investigators and family members said that Amber and ShyAnne had an ongoing dispute over a boy. Amber's mother said, "They'd been kinda tiffin' since grade school or junior high about this boy. These kids need to know this is not how you handle your anger, you don't take a knife or a vehicle at someone."
ShyAnne's family said that they turned over new social media evidence to the police - evidence, they say, suggests that ShyAnne was not the driver of the pickup that struck Amber. ShyAnne's aunt said, "I feel like ShyAnne knows something and she is not releasing information. There's a lot more people involved." Prosecutors say they have no knowledge of this new evidence.
