After six years, six trials and two hung juries, Robert Alvarez and Darnell Razz were finally convicted of first-degree murder. Phone records, forensics and the testimony of his own friends implicated Robert in the 2010 robbery that ended with the deaths of two store clerks at a Greenacres Circle K.
On April 30, 2010, Robert and Darnell burst into the empty Circle K store at about 11:45 p.m. for a planned robbery. While Ralston Muller, 39, emptied a cash drawer, Robert’s handgun discharged and a bullet pierced a Marlboro cigarettes advertising sign. That’s when Darnell, clutching an assault rifle, suddenly shot both Ralston and the other clerk, Michael Dean Bennett, 48.
Ralston died of a single shot to his neck. Michael, who had been stocking shelves and was ordered to his knees, died from wounds to his chest and abdomen.
Evidence included printouts of text messages from Robert’s cell phone from the day police divers were searching a lake where police say Darnell toss the gun. When informed about the search of the lake that day, Robert texted, “Yea I no jus pray.”
Robert’s friend, Marshayla Garland, said she drove Robert and Darnell to and from a spot about 100 yards from Circle K on the night of the murders. She testified that Robert and Darnell jumped into her car and Robert ordered her to drive fast. She said she looked in the rearview mirror and saw Darnell holding the rifle. “The two of them were panicking, out of breath,” she said, adding that Robert yelled, “Just go! Just drive the car!”
