Jury deliberations resumed this morning in the first degree murder trial of two Omaha black militants accused in the bombing death of a white police officer. Edward Poindexter, 26, and David Rice, 23, are accused in the death of patrolman Larry Minard when a suitcase bomb containing dynamite exploded in a North Omaha home on August 17, 1970. He was killed when lured to a vacant house on Omaha's near north side by a phony call of a woman in distress.
Edward and David were members of the Black Panther Party. The two men had been targeted by the FBI's COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program), which operated against and infiltrated anti-war and Civil Rights groups, including the Omaha Black Panthers.
At 2 AM on August 17, a call was made to the Omaha police 911 operator reporting a woman dragging screaming into a vacant house at 2867 Ohio Street . A total of four cars carrying eight policemen arrived at the location. No neighbors corroborated the information that a woman had been dragged screaming into the vacant house. The caller had given the address to a boarded up house. Five of the officers stepped over the suitcase as they entered the house. Larry Minard had tripped over the suitcase as he was leaving.
