Charge:  1st degree murder
County:  Dubuque
City:  Dubuque
Current Status:  First Judicial District
Date of Crime:  June 9, 2015
Tentative Discharge Date:  Life
Victim:  Kimberly Lorraine Stern

On June 9, 2015, at 10:00 AM, Dubuque police responded to 2155 Clarke Drive to investigate a suspicious call.  The male caller, later identified as Robert Charles Stern of this address, was very vague when telling 911 that he heard something and implied that someone may have died in his residence.  Robert told the dispatcher he was dying of cancer and mentioned his daughter but would not elaborate about her.

Responding officers located Robert sitting in a chair in the living room at 2155 Clarke Drive.  Next to Robert was a black LG cellphone that was ringing while officers were on the scene.  Also located near Robert was a bag containing ammunition and gun cleaning supplies.  Three empty gun holsters were also located in the bag and near Robert.  Also lying near Robert was a note that said, “April, this is goodbye I will not be around much longer God has called me home.  Thanx for everything, Love always Bob.”

Police were directed by Robert to a back bedroom but he told police that he didn’t know the name of the person in the back bedroom.  He also stated that he could not remember his daughter’s name.  Located in a rear bedroom was a deceased female identified as Kimberly Lorraine Stern.  Kimberly suffered what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

Robert was interviewed and stated Kimberly “pushed his buttons” and he got very mad.  Robert stated he went to Kimberly’s room to “do something” and she did not say anything at this time because he did not have anything in his hands.  Robert stated he left her room, got a gun and came back to Kimberly’s room, stood in the doorway and shot her.  He stated Kimberly was standing in front of him inside her room and when he shot her, Kimberly looked surprised then fell to the floor.  Robert stated he figured Kimberly was still alive so he stood over her and shot her multiple times with the gun.  He stated he went and got another gun and shot Kimberly again.  He stated he may have obtained a third gun and shot Kimberly with it also.  Located near Kimberly’s body were three handguns.  Robert stated he dropped the guns where he was standing in Kimberly’s room after shooting her.  He did not have a time frame for when all of this occurred stating after he shot Kimberly multiple times, he called 911 and sat in the chair in the living room until police arrived.

Robert stated that he knew what he did was bad and admitted that he shot and killed Kimberly.  He said that he shot all the rounds of the guns, estimating each having six rounds in it.  He stated he kept the guns loaded and he stored them in a green bag inside the residence.  Upon examination of Kimberly’s body, investigators confirmed she had been shot multiple times.
