A suspect fired several shots at Pottawattamie County Sherrif and Omaha Police Department officials following a chase that began in Atlantic on May 31, 2005.  Atlantic police said that David Wayne Baxter, 22, of Omaha allegedly broke into Karla Smit's Atlantic home about 4:30 PM.  David allegedly struck Karla, 58, in the face with a pistol butt and, after ransacking the home, took her purse and minivan.  police radioed area law enforcement to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

A short time later, David was spotted by Pottawattamie County Deputy Chad Freeburg, who gave chase on westbound Interstate 80.  He said the suspect fired numerous times at law enforcement officials as the chase entered Omaha.  No one was hit.

Deputy James Harvey was the lead pursuit vehicle in the chase, which reached speeds of 100 mph.  Members of the Iowa State Patrol laid out stop sticks to blow the van's tires, but David avoided hitting them.  David traveled on I-80, I-29, and I-680 and eventually surrendered to Omaha police near 63rd and Spaulding in Omaha.
