Date of Crime: June 5, 1979
Victim: Jim Goslee
David Stranghoener resided with his wife, Polly, in a house located in La Vista, Nebraska. Also residing here was Charles McGee, Dennis Paulson, and Laureen Leander, co-defendants. It appears that these individuals comprised a social "family." One additional member of this family was the victim, Jim Goslee.
On June 5, 1979, the parties met at the home of David Stranghoener for a house party, which was attended by two additional co-defendants, Darrell Thomas and Michael Meegan. At this party, Darrell and Michael were made aware of the fact that Jim Goslee would be killed that evening.
The record indicates that alcohol and various drugs were being consumed by the family members, and that on at least one occasion, Jim was given Whiskey which had been drugged. At some time during the evening, several of the co-defendants proceeded to a basement recreation room with Jim, while Michael, Charles and David loaded a rifle in an upstairs bedroom. Before they returned to the basement, Michael and Charles went outside the house and decided that Charles would shoot Jim. It was determined that Michael would hand the rifle, owned and provided by David, to Charles upon hearing the code word "EXECUTE."
Charles returned to the basement, turned up a stereo, and gave the code word. Michael stepped down into the basement and handed the rifle to Charles, who in turn, shot Jim. Charles later testified that the rifle was an automatic weapon, and he fired the weapon until the gun was empty.
After the shooting had taken place, Jim's body and clothes were searched, and his social security card, comb, and a notepad were destroyed. At 10 PM, the body was wrapped up in a sheet and a quilt blanket was taken from one of Jim's couches. Charles, Michael and Darrell drove over to Iowa where the body was thrown into a creek bed. The body was subsequently discovered on June 18, 1979.
