Police have one man in custody after a Lincoln woman was found strangled in her home on the afternoon of Thursday, April 8, 1999. Betty Bich Tran's sister found the 34-year old woman lying in her bed in her house on the 4500 block of South 47th Street just before 2 PM and called police. Preliminary autopsy results showed she had been strangled and her wrist had been slit.
Shortly after 9 PM the same day, police contacted their suspect, 28-year old Dat V. Nguyen at BryanLGH West after he had attempted suicide. From Dat's apartment on the 2500 block of Vine Street, his brother reported to 911 that Dat had cut himself and was bleeding. After Dat was treated and released from the hospital from cuts on his wrists, police took him into the station for questioning where he was later arrested.
Police said that Betty and Dat had a social relationship and the two carpooled to work in Crete. Police knew of Dat's social relationship with Betty, but he was no a suspect until he was questioned after the attempted suicide.
