An Omaha man has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for killing his friend's mother who had allowed him to live in her home. Jamar Perkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the March 31, 2003, death of Doretta Leschber, 51.
Jamar, 22, wrote in a letter that he wanted to thank the family for taking care of him, so he decided to steal one of their cars so they could collect insurance money. Prosecutors contended that Jamar simply wanted the car.
Jamar thought Doretta would be gone the day he went to her house to get the car, but she got a late start and was home when he arrived. It was then that Doretta was killed. A police report indicated she was killed with a blunt object. Jamar turned himself in to Las Vegas authorities days after Doretta's death and confessed to the killing.
The sexual assault charge stems from Jamar's admission to consensual sex with a 15-year old girl.
