James Thompson and his wife, Theresa McCline Thompson, were ordered to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder stemming from the May 24, 1971, knife slaying of retired Army Col. Robert F. Bates of Palmetto, FL.
A cocktail waitress at Romeo's, an Omaha night club, Cheryl Vosler, testified she saw Robert Bates with Theresa in Romeo's the night he was killed. A Prairie Village, KS, man Hartmann Goetze, testified James robbed him at knife point the night of April 30, in the Thompson's apartment. Hartmann also testified he had paid Theresa about $30 to commit an act of prostitution. Mildred Reed testified she saw several figures apparently assist someone from the Thompson apartment building and then carry something into the alley between her home and the street.
Robert Bates' body was found at 11:30 PM in a garage about 20 feet from Mildred's home after Mildred called the police.
