Full Name:  James Charles Tyson, Sr.
DOB:  February 17, 1975
Charge:  Attempted murder
County:  Scott
City:  Davenport
Current Status:  Anamosa State Penitentiary
Date of Crime:  July 3, 2009
Tentative Discharge Date:  July 30, 2037
Victim:  Michael Grabbe

On July 3, 2009, James Charles Tyson, Sr., attacked a stranger, Michael Grabbe.  Michael was standing outside of the Do-Dah Tap bar at 702 W. 3rd Street in Davenport when James approached him and stated “You’re doing to die.”  James stabbed Michael approximately 15 times in the chest and abdomen, severely injuring him so that upon arrival to the hospital, Michael had stopped breathing and his heart had stopped beating.  The doctor who treated Michael later testified that Michael “was close to not surviving.”

When James was apprehended about one and half blocks from where the attack occurred, he threw a large knife, approximately 5½ inches long, on the ground that had Michael’s blood on it.  James also had Michael’s blood on his clothes.  James was charged with attempted murder.

At trial, James claimed he acted in self-defense, testifying that he stabbed a man “probably twice” but “didn’t stab nobody no fifteen times.”  The district court found him guilty as charged.
